THE ISRAEL MUSEUM |

FLYLIGHT and FF3 are both part of the exhibition 'Curious Minds' at The Israel Museum in Jeruzalem. The exhibition tries to challenge the definitions of design and encourages a new discourse about the role design plays in shaping our world.

It has invited artists that have explored digital and interactive technologies to produce innovative work and, under the umbrella of “critical design,” used design to ask probing questions about human behavior and to address the social, cultural, and ethical consequences of emerging technologies.

About DRIFT

“We are curious about the future, not only the new technologies that are changing design, but also the evolutionary developments in nature and human culture. We strive to find the perfect combination of knowledge and intuition, science fiction and nature, fantasy and interactivity. Our goal is to create a dialogue between the viewer and the objects we create, embodied in tangible objects that refer to realities that are often impenetrable and difficult to understand.” - Ralph Nauta & Lonneke Gordijn

The studio was founded by Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn, both graduates of the Design Academy of Einhoven. The duo's skills are complimentary; Nauta's precise knowledge of craft, materials and production techniques; Gordijn's intuitive awareness of concept and composition. The resulting works are an intriguing amalgamation of fantasy and increasingly relevant reality. They question relationship between nature, technology and humankind.

“In this time of information overload and exaggerated senses, we hope that our work emphasizes the metaphysical quality of human sensations, that it establishes a point of balance in the midst of the contradictions of daily life, and that it stresses immaterial - spiritual and emotional - values. Because of these goals, light has been one of our favourite mediums; light expresses emotions in a very direct way.”

Studio DRIFT’s work includes the DANDELIGHT, FLYLIGHT, FRAGILE FUTURE, SHYLIGHT, OILLIGHT and the GHOST Collection.

Since 2006 their work has been exhibited at leading museums and fairs worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum London, Museum of Arts & Design New York, World Expo Shanghai, Design/ Miami, Salone del Mobile Milan, Design Week Tokyo and Design Act Moscow.

DRIFT has been awarded several times for their designs, including ëLight of the Future’ from the German Design Council in 2008 for FRAGILE FUTURE. Most recently, Nauta and Gordijn's FRAGILE FUTURE Concrete Chandelier has won ëThe Moet Hennessy - Pavillion of Art and Design London Prize 2010’ and has been acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

DRIFT FRAGILE FUTURE is represented by Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London.

COUNT SHEEP

makers: Lonneke Gordijn
materiaal: Light, Animation, Projection, Installation

Count Sheep is a filmprojection made for a building in Eindhoven. This animation is about Lonneke's fantasy of what is happening behind the blind walls of this business premise. The film is projected on the building, but the only way to see it is within the boundaries of your own shadow.
You never see the whole animation at once. You have to walk up and down the wall. Together you'll see more.

U WOOD C

makers: Ralph Nauta
materiaal: Aluminum, Glassfiber, Carbon and Rubber

Many children spend too much time inside the house using computers. Social contacts are often by sms or msn. Children don't develop the social and creative skills they need anymore.
U Wood C stimulates kids to play outside. These toolboxes use the wannahave image of a skateboard to create a trend in building huts. The box provides only the most necessary tools for building wooden constructions, which stimulates creativity and inventiveness. A new healthy trend is created. Playing outside becomes hot again!

The toolbox comes in different colours and materials such as the ultimate carbon, so it can be customized in any way you like.

FRAMED

makers: Ralph Nauta
materiaal: Aluminium and EPS

Framed is an inline skate company owned and launched by Ralph Nauta.
Framed designs and produces PATENTED inline stunt skate frames. Normal frames are made of one part ABS, we combined the strength of aluminium with the sliding capability's of ABS.

My frames are more ridged for speed, stronger for hard impacts and the ABS part that wears out can easily be replaced. The ABS part can be quick changed for an other part so you can skate other obstacles. You can choose from anti-rocker, 4-down and freestyle.

Framed has also a clothing line and sponsors the 3 best inline skaters of the Netherlands. Sven Boekhort (former World Champion) Adil Farhouni and Edwin Wijering.

SHYLIGHT

makers: Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn
materiaal: stainless steel, aluminum, silk and high powered LED’s

SHYLIGHT is a light hidden in a cocoon. It is based on the natural process by which flowers attract and repel pollen-gathering bees. It falls out of its ëcocoon’, open sits petaals and floats own to show all its splendor. At the slightest danger Shylight flips up and retreats into its shell.

SHYLIGHT unfolds its blossom by a systems of springs. The lampshade is made out of many layers of pure silk, kept apart by arms that connect to the springs. The silk is stitched in such a structure that it dances with every movement. Gravity lets SHYLIGHT slide down and a motor controlls the upward movement. The brightness of the LED and the speed of the movement are fully programmable and can be controlled by I-phone or Ipad.

A group of SHYLIGHTS can be programmed to perform a choreography together on a piece of music. Imagine a hall with a field of Shylights hanging from the roof, all moving together…

FRAGILE FUTURE III

makers: Drift and Carpenters Workshop
materiaal: Electronics and real dandelions.

FRAGILE FUTURE III tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two extremes have made a pact to survive. FRAGILE FUTURE III combines an electrical system with real dandelions in a light sculpture that is predestined to overgrow a surface.

This system is different from the earlier versions because we can build up 3D constructions with the newly developed modules. Therefore we have total freedom in creating different light installations. This project is a collaboration with the London based Carpenters Workshop gallery. The installations are limited and can be bought true them. We also produce custom installations on commission. The installations are delivered on Plexiglas so they can be easily installed and reinstalled. 5 Spare Dandelion light bulbs are included.

One module is a visible circuit with 3 dandelights. This module system is ease to attach to the next one (in unlimited different ways), meanwhile the power will always continue correctly true the installation. So it is possible to create a composition from just a few, up to 500 modules, according to the space and atmosphere.

FRAGILE FUTURE III is far less fragile then FRAGILE FUTURE I and II. Therefore easy to install and maintain. FRAGILE FUTURE I, II and III are limited and built by our company.

for info and rates please contact: Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

FLYLIGHT

makers: Lonneke Gordijn,
materiaal: glass, electronics and halogen lights

To see the movie full screen click: Fly light film

FLYLIGHT is an interactive light installation composed of a minimum of 180 glass tubes. The glass tubes that light up and respond to the viewer are inspired by the behavior of a flock of birds and the fascinating patterns they seem to make randomly in the air. Actually this behaviour is not as accidental as it looks; birds have to keep a safe distance from each other. What will happen if an intruder interrupts their flight? This is what the viewer will experience when approaching the FLYLIGHT. We converted this bird-behaviour into a digital DNA and translated it into understandable visualisations with light. Each light is controlled individually, but the behavior is not programmed to a repeated pattern.Time after time the birds have to choose their way within the borders of the installation.

The lights can see their environment through sensors that translate the information into a computer simulation, which drives the electronics of the lights.

The first designs for FLYLIGHT were commissioned in 2007 and have further developed into the current form, which was shown at Salone del Mobile 2011 in Milan for the first time outside the Netherlands. We are currently working on customized FLYLIGHTS for private houses and public spaces in China, Israel, Russia and Europe.

GHOST COLLECTION

makers: Ralph Nauta, Lonneke Gordijn for DRIFT
materiaal: Plexiglass

The GHOST Collection is a futuristic concept of a chair, a 3D image captured within the boundaries of its outer shell. Specialists from Europe handmade the chairs using the best materials available. A unique 3D technique is used to form unusual subsurface drawings inside the solid Plexiglass chairs. The image of the inner ghost is created by a reflection of light on tiny air bubbles. GHOST Collection is an experiment in shape, high tech production methods and crafts.

The collection exists of 8 table chairs, two different arm chairs: the Queen chair, the King chair, and a stool. The initial concept behind these particular pieces comes from the old times when Kings reigned their kingdoms. The first chair was actually a throne for the King and only he was allowed to sit down. The other guests had to remain standing as a sign of decency, however during fancy dinners people were allowed to sit. All the chairs in the dining room were part of one collection, but from the shape you could see the social position. Of course the King’s chair was the biggest and together with the Queens chair, the only chairs with armrests. The guests at the table could sit on simple chairs with only a backrest. The waiters sat on stools against the wall, ready to jump up to serve the King.

The GHOST collection consists of 11 items and will be released in a limited edition of 8 and 2 AP. In the future we would like to add a few items to the collection including a table, lamp and closet.

OILLIGHT

makers: Ralph Nauta
materiaal: SLS Laser synthering

Oil is used in a lot of materials and products around us. The price of a drum oil is getting higher all the time because of the rapidly sinking oil reserves. Instead of consuming less, the world population is being motivated to buy more oil based products to stimulate the economy.

OILLIGHT is a series of unique lamps made from Nylon, an oil based material. The shape and size of the lamps are directly related to the oil prices. When the oil price rises, one can buy less oil, and therefore less lamp for the same price. The day price of the oil determines the size of the lamp. When the oil price is $100 per barrel, the lamp exists of 100 little drums. Therefore OILLIGHT reflects the direct influence of economical change.

To check the size of the lamp you can order now or to download this widget click: oil price

DANDELIGHT

materiaal: Electronics and dandelions.

DANDELIGHT is a little luminous dandelion. This little piece of real nature lightens up by batteryfood. The real dandelion seeds are one by one connected to te L.E.D.

The DANDELIGHT tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two opposites have made a pact to survive. DANDELIGHT combines a electronic circuit and real dandelions in a little light sculpture.

We ship the DANDELIGHT world wide. To order it go to our web shop.

WATER WEB BENCH

makers: Ralph Nauta, Lonneke Gordijn for DRIFT
materiaal: Polyurea and EPS

This loveseat came about with the idea of people who are in love. Being playful and teasing one another, attracting yourself to each other. Sitting on this bench has a similar playful feeling - playing with the water and the water playing back. Water is pumped from inside the bench, up to the seat and flows through the web. You can follow the water flowing underneath you and see it sparkle as the sun bounces off of it.

While designing this piece, we were looking for a pattern that emphasizes the combination of man vs. nature. We stumbled upon a research of NASA back in the seventies whereby spiders were given drugs to see how they would react. Once receiving the drugs they started to make webs; depending on the drug type and the amount of drugs the spider had received, it did the best it could do. The most contradictory facts are the marijuana nor speed slowed the spider, it was the caffeine that created the most unconventional web. We decided to show this direct influence of man on nature in our patterns then the Water Web Bench was born.

There are three different web patterns with 3 bench colors. 23 RAL colors available on request.
WATER WEB BENCH is the first product that Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn designed together, a true loveseat!

FRAGILE FUTURE II

makers: Lonneke Gordijn
materiaal: Electronics and dandelions

FRAGILE FUTURE II tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two extremes have made a pact to survive. FRAGILE FUTURE II combines an electronical system with real dandelions in a lightsculpture that is predestined to overgrow a surface.

One module is a visible circuit with four dandelights. This module system is ease to attach to the next one (in seven different ways),twhile the switch-leg will continue. So it is possible to create a composition from just a few, up to 50 modules, according to the space and atmosphere.

FRAGILE FUTURE II is also a limited installation with a far less fragile electrical system then FRAGILE FUTURE I. Therefore easier to built and install. Both FRAGILE FUTURE I and II are built by the designer Lonneke Gordijn, for info and rates please send her a mail to lonneke@designdrift.nl.

FRAGILE FUTURE I

makers: Lonneke Gordijn
materiaal: Electronics and dandelions

Limited Edition of 200 Modules for around 8 installations.

FRAGILE FUTURE tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two extremes have made a pact to survive. FRAGILE FUTURE combines an electronical system with real dandelions in a lightsculpture that is predestined to overgrow a surface. Electronics are driven by the natural survival instincts.

The fragile installation protects itself by pretending to be out of order when someone comes too close (optional). This is the same mechanism as a poppy that drops its petal when you pick it, or a ladybird that acts as dead in your hand when caught.

Design by Lonneke Gordijn's for her cum laude Design Academy graduation project in 2005.

MODULE KITCHEN

makers: Ralph Nauta for DRIFT
materiaal: Stainless Steel & Oak Wood

The MODULE KITCHEN can be used the way a kitchen was meant to be: small animals can be skinned and cleaned after hunting, cutting vegetables can be done straight on the surface.
Cooking is not clean, it is a rough, messy and precise adventure, that needs the right equipment. The MODULE KITCHEN is for people who enjoy the basic necessities in life. Each kitchen function is a seperate module, so you can decide for yourself how to build your own kitchen. The different modules can be placed in may different ways, against a wall or free in a space, even outside. And you can change the setup all the time, because they are not unmovable build into a house. If you move to a new place, the kitchen can come with you!

VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM

makers: Jane Withers
materiaal: Brons, real dandelions, leds, electronics

We proudly present our work Fragile Future 3.4 at the V&A Museum in london. Our work is part of the exposition In Praise of Shadows.

In Praise of Shadows is a project which has been organised by EUNIC - a network of European Cultural Centres - together with the support of the EC's office in London - to mark the initial phasing-out of low-efficiency light bulbs. The project is curated by Jane Withers and includes works by twenty European designers who bring imaginative thinking to the potential of low energy lighting. It is an opportunity not just to change a bulb but change the way we think about light - and darkness. The exhibition takes place in the Jones Galleries (closed for refurbishment) at the V&A, where the new lights will be like mysterious visitors in the darkened galleries.

M.A.D. NEW YORK

makers: David McFadden
materiaal: Brons, real dandelions, leds, electronics

We were asked to build our largest installation of Fragle Future III yet by the New York based Museum of Arts and Design. The show is caled Dead or Alive and is currated by David McFadden. We are showing our work among other artist like Damian Hirst, Nick Cave, Kate MccGwire and Levi van Veluw.

The exhibition explores a territory related to MADs Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary, which featured contemporary works created from multiples of ordinary manufactured items. In Dead or Alive, the materials transformed by the artists are entirely natural. Once-living parts of flora and fauna are recombined and rearranged into works of art that address the transience of life, and all that is elegant and alarming about the natural world.

Dead or Alive, presented by the Museum of Arts and Design will run from April 27 through October 24, 2010.
